Sepcial Events Review: 2008

1. When We COS Together”

MOCA Taipei’s “Infantization” exhibition showed works from a young generation of artists from Mainland China. At the same time it also offered a starting point, at a time of rapid globalization, for people to observe and compare the lifestyles and ideas of young people across Asia. Clear commonalities included the influence of computer games, comic books/animations, the Internet and commercial culture. Indeed, the trends of this new era have encouraged young people to create their own language – COSPLAY – to showcase both themselves and their work.

Cosplayers infused animations, comic books and computer games with new life in a unique way, turning this into a highly spontaneous alternative body language for an era of images. On Saturday afternoon on March 15, 2008, MOCA Taipei organized “When We COS Together” , highlighting Taiwanese Pili puppet theater Cosplay,  inviting popular comic book characters to host interactive games whilst also revealing the process of make up and costumes design, creating an image in miniature of Taiwan Cosplay.

2. “Strawberry Portraits” competition

MOCA Taipei’s 2008 exhibition “Infantization” offered a cross section of work from a new generation of young Chinese artists. The characteristics and ideas that inform many of these pieces resonate with the “strawberry generation” in Taiwan - people born in the 1980’s and 1990’s. The question is what sort of work can a generation that has just left or is reluctant to leave school produce? In order to encourage us all to reflect on this point MOCA organized the “Strawberry Portraits” competition, in which individuals of all ages were invited to submit their impressions of the younger generation. This activity proved particularly popular, with submissions from elementary school students and much older participants from all over Taiwan. More than 500 pieces were submitted with the 32 selected displayed in the plaza in front of MOCA Taipei from March 25-April 13, 2008.

3. “36 Ways to Enjoy a Museum – T Shirt Designing Competition”

In May 2008 MOCA Taipei organized “36 Ways to Enjoy a Museum – T Shirt Designing Competition” , inviting talent individuals from different backgrounds to take part in a T Shirt designing competition. This marked a deliberate attempt to challenge the stuffy way museums are perceived, especially by the younger generation. N this context an ordinary T Shirt is transformed into something of meaning and worn by visitors to MOCA, upturning established conventions and highlighting the imagination and passion of museums. A total of 31 teams signed up to take part in the competition, each one displaying limitless creativity and imagination. The results of their work was displayed in a fashion show format, including judges and prizes in the outdoor plaza at MOCA Taipei on May 31,2008. Prize winning works were displayed at MOCA from June 3-15, 2008.

4. “7th Birthday – T-shirt Silk Print Competition”

MOCA Taipei celebrated its seventh birthday in 2008. As a way of sharing this happy occasion with the wider public, young artists were invited to create a custom made MOCA commemorative silk print. On May 31st all visitors to the museum with an age that ended in the number 7 were granted free admission and allowed to DIY make their own T shirts, the end result being a unique limited edition T shirt to take home with them.

In addition, two hours before the films were shown, visitors gathered in the outdoor plaza in front of MOCA were regaled with four “street artist performances”  - a magic show, balloon sculptures, musical performance and clay molding .

6. City Images on the Move – Hide & Seek Motion Photography Competition

Lost space hidden in the city at night was the source of creative inspiration for the architects who worked on “Dark City,” just as wandering through the city viewing fragmentary images became the main focus of the artists working on “Eye of the City,” showing a different view of city images. MOCA Taipei called on photographers from across the city to play a game of city hide and seek, using their cameras to capture surprising images that give a completely new and fresh face to the city.. Over 100 works were submitted for competition, with the 26 nominated pieces displayed as “Citizen Art Window”  on August 5th, 2008 at MOCA.

7. Citizen Art Window “Chinese Valentine’s Day”

MOCA Taipei held a Valentine’s Day competition as part of the “Citizen Art Window” program, inviting couples in love to transform themselves into artists of love and to express their feelings for one another as creatively as possible. These were then continuously displayed through MOCA’s 24-frame projector window from 7PM until midnight. This activity was also combined with an excellent animation designed by artist Lee Ming-tao, to showcase the sweetness and romanticism of true love.

In commemoration of Historical Monuments and Sites Day, for the first time Taipei City government’s Department of Cultural Affairs this year worked in close concert with contemporary Taiwanese artists. More than 20 historical monuments and sites management offices and artists were invited to design stalls infused with “art” and “creative” elements. These were then arranged in the plaza in front of MOCA as part of a Historical Monuments and Sites Fair. In addition to stalls from many of the most famous sites in Taiwan, offering snacks and beverages, there was also an “art street” selling sugar sculptures, rhythmic story telling, spinning tops, and dough figurines. These are events that remind visitors of the joy and wonder of childhood. In addition, there was also a free handicraft workshop where visitors were invited to learn paper cutting, plastic printing etc.

9.三合一MOCA=Music+Movie+Market

9. Three in One – MOCA = Music + Movie + Market

In October 2008, MOCA Taipei started to hold a “Three in One – MOCA” event at 2:00PM every Saturday outside the museum. These events are a combination of concert, creative market and film shows, all of which have proved very popular with the public.

The theme and content of these regular events was designed to reflect whatever exhibition was showing at MOCA Taipei at the time. This also marked the first time the museum has sought to breathe life into the idea of a “theme-based creative market”. After viewing the exhibition inside the museum, visitors can then attend events in the outdoor plaza to gain an even better understanding of many of the exhibits on display. It is hoped this will provide a solid foundation to encourage further reflection on contemporary art and the ways in which it intersects with daily life.
