In 2008, MOCA Taipei expanded the scale of the Artist-in-School program to focus on the theme of “creating backstreet aesthetics”, by implementing the idea of “incorporating public art with school courses”.  As a result, art and cultural courses at Jan Cheng Junior High School were supplemented with artists-taught classes, whereby students were guided in creative courses and worked together in creating beautiful backstreet spaces and energetic community activities.

A ten-week program was conducted under the joint leadership of visual artists Lin-ju Hung, Meng-hua Chou,Wei Lin, Chih-chieh Huang, performance artists Tzu-hao Fu, Mei-kuang Lee, Hsing-ho Chen, Hsiu-ling Shen and the school’s art and culture teachers Pei-chi Liu, Li-kung Huang, and Yu-hsuen Chiang.  Throughout the program, the artists taught students how to utilize their observations of the communities they live in to start a dialogue with the spaces of those communities via their physical bodies, and ultimately transforming their ideas into public art installations or carnival floats intended to revitalize the community’s spirit. The children were also taught how to run creative market stalls, by using what they’ve learned in class to produce and sell small works of art.  DIY activities were also designed in conjunction with these stalls to encourage the students to share the creativities and skills they have learned with the public.
